February can bring good news for Rocky Point Mexico. The announcement of Lukeville extended weekend hours is huge help. It greatly helps Americans going to and from Puerto Peñasco and others. And because this latest conflict is about time… support couldn’t come at a better time.
Spring Break 2025 is coming up soon. Whereas, Valentine’s Day Weekend 2025 had lots of heartache. Americans on holiday weekend getaways were stressed out entering Mexico through Sonoyta. However, that was nothing compared to the mess in the other direction. Just ask many of those trying to re-enter the United States through the Lukeville Port of Entry.
Valentine’s Day Mass Delay

The legendary Al Capone had visits to Puerto Peñasco. Hence, I’d be tempted to call the mass delays a Valentine’s Day Massacre. They were bad to force Lukeville extended weekend hours. But not that bad.
The Mexican Guardia Nacional (Nacional Guard) is now througly checking vehicles in Sonoyta. It is happening just before reaching the Lukeville Port of Entry on the U.S. side of the border. For me on Saturday morning, it took 30 minutes to search the car in front of me and then mine.
On Sunday and Monday evenings of the holiday weekend, people were waiting hours in line. Social media was blowing up. People were frustrated and scared about what would happen if they didn’t pass through Lukeville by the posted 8:00 p.m. closing.
Lukeville CBP is A-OK

Learning of new Lukeville extended weekend hours is no surprise to those in the know. The Lukeville Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Team is rock solid with Rocky Point. I can say this with confidence because I cross the border way more than the average family of bears do in any given year.
CBP stepped up on the spot to save the day and the nights being spent by people sleeping in their vehicles in Sonoyta. It agreed to stay open after hours to help those in line get home to the United States.
New Lukeville Extended Weekend Hours
The new Lukeville extended weekend hours will now stretch from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
They will begin in March 2025 and are set to run through October 2025. This provides two additional hours each weekend night. This should go a long way considering most people wisely choose to limit driving in the dark in Sonora and rural Arizona.
Praise Puerto Peñasco Government
Puerto Peñasco Mayor Dr. Oscar Eduardo Castro Castro and other local and state leaders also richly deserve credit. They immediately sought solutions to the problem which spells big trouble for tourism.
The new Lukeville Extended Weekend Hours are a good start. Next, they will seek timesaving measures with the Guardia Nacional.
It is a great example of government officials on both sides of the border eagerly working together to solve problems. Public servants serving all the people is good when it happens, isn’t it?
