The 2024 Rocky Point Rally is upon us. Once again, it looks like the rally is a really good thing for Puerto Peñasco. As usual, Mother Nature is doing her part. The weather on the northern shores of the Sea of Cortez is spectacular this weekend. Sunny and a little cooler than previous years. However, that seems to be just fine with the cool people I met and others I enjoyed watching.
The 4-day event features a wide range of activities which participants can choose to participate in or do their own thing. There are group rides and shows, social gatherings day and night, food and drink, fun and sun, the sounds of music and of course, revved up motorcycle engines.
The one element that is not voluntary is registration. This is because proceeds from the $30 registration fees collected are spread around to charitable organizations across Puerto Peñasco.
Greatest Motorcycle Fiesta
The 2024 Rocky Point Rally was rolled out with the same marketing tagline which has worked for years. They call it “The Greatest Motorcycle Fiesta Just South of the Border.”
Intentionally, the word “just” has been long used in marketing efforts because it highlights the location of Rocky Point Mexico and its proximity to the U.S. Mexico border. This has been successful in helping to attract motorcycle enthusiasts from across the United States.
However, a strong local and national appeal also makes for a great mix. Rest assured, Mexican bikers also come to town to get in on the fun. They regularly ride in from Juarez to Mexicali, and many other cities across the host country of Mexico.
2024 Rocky Point Rally
Early Friday morning, I rode into Rocky Point Mexico on 4 wheels. I couldn’t help but notice state police vehicles lined up as soon as I crossed the border into Sonora from Lukeville, Arizona. They were present in the town of Sonoyta as well as out on Mexico Federal Highway 8, the Sonoyta – Peñasco highway.
It made for repetition of a pre-emptive “Don’t Do Anything Foolish” message if I have ever seen one.
However, as you will see in the video below, “The 2024 Rocky Point Rally Reel,” I saw no trouble whatsoever. It is the latest example of the difference between the stereotypical image of “bikers” and real people who love motorcycles.
Shout out to Oscar Palacio Soto
Special thanks and congratulations to its founder, Oscar Palacio Soto. He drives the event and organizes it in a such a way it is a much-needed boost for the local businesses and needy members of the community. Oscar has made the annual Rocky Point Rally event his baby for 24 years. And like every parent, he has done his best to love his baby and help it grow.
