Every American woman may look at Mexico differently in their future trips to Puerto Peñasco. It is because political history was made over the weekend. And the entire world was watching, not just the Mexican people. The top story of Mexico’s 2024 federal election is Claudia Sheinbaum elected as the nation’s next president. However, the most important angle for many is she will become the country’s first female president dominated by men. She is also the first Jewish president in a country still dominated by Catholics.
Roughly 60-million of Mexico’s 100-million registered voters hit the polls to cast their ballot. Claudia Sheinbaum collected a similar percentage of the voting. With most of the votes counted, Sheinbaum has garnered 59%. Her female opponent, Xóchitl Gálvez, lands in a distant second place with around 28%. Jorge Álvarez Máynez winds up in third with more than 10% of the vote.
The convincing outcome shows more than a clear victory. It represents a resounding landslide shared by two of Mexico’s largest and influential groups. The Morena Party and women.
Who is Claudia Sheinbaum?
She is a 61-year-old former scientist who gained nationwide political clout as the mayor of Mexico City, the nation’s capital. That alone is enough credentials. However, who was affiliated with and endorsed by were also of major importance to Claudia Sheinbaum.
This is because Mexicans were also voting on whether to continue outgoing president Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s way of government. He has been the powerful leader of the Morena Party for the six years of his team. Much of the incoming’s popularity is attributed to him.
Sheinbaum says she will follow AMLO’s security and economic policies. These are the two leading concerns of Mexican citizens. Sheinbaum the candidate has in fact been linked so closely to AMLO, she received criticism from people who remain unsure what she herself will stand for as president.
President and Heroine
The voices of 2 in 5 registered voters in Mexico made it clear they preferred someone else to be their next president. However, because of winning, it will be hard to dispute Claudia Sheinbaum as a heroine and role model for generations of women in Mexico.
She will get to work with other female presidents of Latin American countries. Yet, the main issue which will impact those with interests in Rocky Point Mexico is what kind of relationship she has with the next president of the United States.
