History keeps repeating itself. And because of that, it is bad news in this case. Unfortunately, there is not much ammunition required to make such a claim. So, here goes. 2 Utah residents have been arrested in Sonoyta, Sonora for illegally smuggling American ammunition into Mexico.
In the official report, Mexican state and federal authorities identified a man as Norman “N,” and a woman as Kim “N.” The couple was charged with illegally transporting 285 9mm caliber shells into the country. The ammunition was confiscated. And naturally, so was the Ford pickup the couple was driving, as well as the 2020 Reflection motor home being towed by it.
Sonoyta Border Ammo Bust
The surprising discovery of American ammunition took place at the border checkpoint in Sonoyta. was made by Mexico Nacional Guard officers at the border checkpoint in Sonoyta. The charges were coordinated with the State Security Bureau in Sonora.
The couple had just crossed the border at Lukeville, Arizona. They were planning to enjoy a visit to Puerto Peñasco. However instead, they now find themselves detained in a nearby Mexican jail. Meantime, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Mexico will handle the investigation.
Severe Penalties in Sonoyta
The warnings have been issued for many years. Mexico has strict laws and regulations on guns and ammunition. They are much different than those in the United States, and so are the legal and justice systems.
Therefore, it simply cannot be stated often enough. Taking American ammunition into Mexico is guaranteed to create terrifying and troubling legal problems. The penalties can mean years in a Mexican prison.
Furthermore, there can be thousands of dollars in fines, and of course thousands more in fees for legal representation. (One can also expect to fork over thousands of dollars in “various miscellaneous fees.” These payments will be made to influence those with authority in the Mexican judicial system to minimize the personal damage done to the accused).
All Ammunition Applies
This story is the latest example. It is not just American guns which will get you in trouble if you take them south of the border. American ammunition will also get you thrown in jail. And by this it means even empty shell casings, not just unused ammo.
So, here is one more warning. If you think you are headed to Rocky Point, be sure to think about the vehicle you will take and what might be found inside of it by Mexican Nacional Guard officers conducting a search.
