We need open minds and open lines of communication to keep open the U.S. Mexico border. I don’t like focusing on politics here. However, the latest in the AMLO Trump relationship has potential significance to all of us who love the Sonoran Sun Resort and Rocky Point Mexico.
Maybe you are like me. Puerto Peñasco is more than just my favorite beach getaway. Of course, I love basking in the beauty of Sandy Beach and the Sea of Cortez. Yet, the seaside resort town in northwest Sonora is also a happy place because I can safely escape get the ugliness of U.S. politics there.
Unless you are living under the abandoned cruise ship pier by Wrecked at the Reef, you know the border mess is one the of major battles of the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. How it plays out can again have a major impact on our little slice of paradise.
AMLO Trump Letter
At his regular morning press conference in Monterrey, Mexico on Friday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador ( a.k.a. AMLO), told reporters he will send a letter to Donald Trump, now that he is again the Republican Party nominee.
Lopez Obrador used the same playbook other world leaders have done to influence Trump by showering his ego with praise. He called Trump “a friend” and “a man of intelligence and vision.” However, the Mexican President added this about the candidate leading in the polls, “He is not well informed.”
Because of this, the AMLO Trump letter next week will hope to reinforce the critical importance of economic integration between Mexico and the United States. Furthermore, the Mexican President will also warn Trump against acting on his threats to close the border, and his continuing to blame migrants for bringing drugs and crime into the United States. “I am going to prove to him that migrants don’t carry drugs to the United States,” said Lopez Obrador. He believes the two countries are closely linked neighbors so intertwined, that neither can bear a closure, even a month-long like we had in December.

Changes Coming in USA and Mexico Governments
It is not just a new AMLO Trump letter coming. This new chapter in their relationship is timely. AMLO is on his way out. Trump could either be on his way out or his way back into the White House. Claudia Sheinbaum takes office on October 1 as the newly elected Mexican President. Meanwhile, Donald Trump will discover one month later if he is re-elected as President of the United States of America.
Like the highway between Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco, the relationship between the leaders of the two countries has its share of treacherous potholes. Bad blood remains between politicians of the two nations. Much of it stemming from Mexico feeling insulted. Meanwhile, the AMLO Trump dealings have somehow risen above it. And there is room for hope because there is so much more of a connection between citizens and businesses of the U.S. and Mexico.
