Today, Mexico is still a nation of predominantly practicing Catholics. Nonetheless, Dia de los Muertos 2024 felt more like a spiritual event than a religious ritual. This aspect is nothing new for “The Day of the Dead.”
Personally, I’m quite happy this holiday tradition remains alive and well. In Puerto Peñasco this weekend, Dia de los Muertos 2024 showed it remains a beautiful experience. The reasoning is not only because it brings together friends and family. However, because it also uniquely brings back the past for a special visit with those in the present. There is no doubt this part is equally important.
Dia de los Muertos Details
Here is a breakdown of what took place over the Dia de los Muertos 2024 weekend. It starts with Halloween, a holiday forever thought of as a day for children. This includes little trick or treaters as well as adults who hold onto the kid inside of them and pay it forward.
All Souls Day is a Catholic holiday the day after Halloween. Whereas, according to the Dia de los Muertos tradition, the gates of heaven open at midnight on Halloween. This allows the spirits of deceased children to return for a day to visit their loved ones here on earth. They are then followed by the adults who have passed away. On these dates, family reunions are a blend of good food and drink, and celebration and love.
The souls of the deceased are honored in many cases by a beautifully decorated altar being created in their memory. But the people in the present decorate themselves in creative outfits and costumes, with beautifully painted faces.
Puerto Peñasco Dia de los Muertos 2024 Parade
Dia de los Muertos 2024 featured various gatherings in small groups. Meanwhile, a big focus of the weekend festivities in Rocky Point was the evening parade last night on Rodeo Drive. It is a street with shops and restaurants located just down the hill and inland from the Sonoran Sun Resort on Sandy Beach.
Hoping to keep alive the memory of loved ones who have passed away is something most of us have in common. And a special bonus of doing it as part of this cultural tradition is you get to create new memories in the process.
