January 4, 2024 is a big day. It doesn’t rise to the level of a date which shall live in infamy. However, it is indeed a day worthy of celebration regarding Rocky Point Mexico. The Lukeville Port of Entry open again is great news…for most of us anyway.
This is undoubtedly a timesaving and convenience event for those who travel to or from Puerto Peñasco from Arizona and other areas in the United States. That in and of itself is the tourism lifeline the local businesses there had been praying for over the past month. To a lesser extent, the open border crossing also allows for the frequent traffic between residents in Sonoyta, Sonora, and Ajo, Arizona.
My 1st Trip through Lukeville Since November
Once I heard the news of the re-opening, I changed my travel plans. The new and improved decision was to tough it out and stay an extra day at our beautiful and empty Sonoran Sun Resort. This was made for a couple reasons. First, was because it spared me the longer drive through the San Luis border crossing. Second, I also was curious about the experience of the Lukeville Port of Entry Open again.
On the way to the border, I noticed construction of the Sentri lane is progressing. It will be open on the Sonoyta, Sonora side of the border. The purpose of the added lane is to save time for those who wish to pay for the privilege to pass motorists waiting in a long line for re-entry to the United States.
It was a beautiful sight to come upon this border crossing I do quite often. Expectedly, there were no cars in front of me on this trip because it was a few days into the new year. I offered heartfelt apologies and thanks to every U.S. Customs and Border Protection I encountered. They really seemed to appreciate the words of support and encouragement.
Lukeville Port of Entry Open to Migrants…Still
Not everything was a welcome sight for me at Lukeville. This is mainly because the immigration problem is alive and well. The stream of migrants coming to enter the United States illegally is still flowing. It was smaller than the hundreds I saw on my previous trip in November. But this time I was told it is now a steady influx of migrants all day long.
Plenty of questions remain. What did the Lukeville Port of Entry closing accomplish? How long will this important border crossing stay open? Can the people and businesses of Puerto Peñasco keep going without a permanent solution here?
Meantime, we hope and wait for answers. The Lukeville Port of Entry Open is what law-abiding citizens want and need. If only the politicians elected to serve us realized that and made it a top priority.
