There is a first time for everything. And today, was the first time on record for a Sonoran Sun Resort whales show. I have owned and rented the Sonoran Sun 510 East condo for 7 years. However, I’ve never seen anything like it. Some people have been around the resort since it opened in 2005. They have never seen or heard anything like what happened today either.
Late this afternoon, I was in the perfect place at the perfect time. But don’t worry. You can be, too. This is because I captured the whales on video and am excited and happy to share it.
Let’s set the scene.
Sonoran Sun 510 East Owners Gathering
What do you do when you’re cooking for the entire Sonoran Sun Resort staff the next day? Well, if you are me, you get ready by cooking up a batch of turkey chili. It made for a tempting invitation to other Sonoran Sun condo owners to come over for a friendly holiday gathering.
I also baked some fresh cornbread which goes with chili like jelly fits peanut butter. And as you might expect along Sandy Beach in Puerto Peñasco, there was tequila flowing as well as a few Tecate Light adult beverages. By the time the sun over the Sea of Cortez made its way west of the Sonoran Sun, the group in my condo was feeling rather festive.
Now for the part which was totally unexpected. The Sonoran Sun Resort whales show.
Surprise Rocky Point Whale Watching Party
Normally, whale watching in Rocky Point Mexico doesn’t happen this way. If you hope to see whales, you must take a boat ride miles out on the Sea of Cortez.
Meanwhile, we were hanging out in a Rocky Point beachfront condo. Our group had gotten around to talking about maintenance of Sonoran Sun Resort condos. My friend Bob Haire was explaining how electrical wiring was commonly done in Puerto Peñasco.
I was sitting at a high-top table watching the magnificent sea over Bob’s left shoulder. Granted, I look at the sea every chance I get. But perhaps my distraction was also because I don’t have much expertise when the topic of conversation is electrical work.
Nevertheless, I vividly remember how I interrupted.
I jumped up shouting, “I just saw a whale!” Being known as a joker, I assured everyone I was completely serious. Truthfully, part of me even had to re-think and convince myself. I sure hoped it wasn’t an embarrassing tequila-induced hallucination.
Seeing Whales from a Sonoran Sun Resort Balcony
By the time we ran onto the Sonoran Sun 510 East balcony, there wasn’t a whale to see. Amazingly, there were multiple whales. I’m not sure exactly how many. It didn’t matter. Given our much-improved vantage point looking directly from the balcony, we saw whales spouting to our right and our left. Some were close to the beach. Others were further out. But all well within our view.
I don’t know if the Sonoran Sun Resort whales show was more exciting or surprising. Here is what I do know. We were in awe. Our wide-eyed group of amazed adults was like a bunch of kids on Christmas morning. That’s the perfect way to describe the experience.
And just like the typical Christmas morning present opening frenzy, the moment shared with the whales was over and done quickly. The whole experience took less than 5 minutes.
However, there is one major difference to point out. You may not remember who gave you that sweater you didn’t need. But I guarantee, those of us in attendance will never forget the 1st Sonoran Sun Resort Whales show.
